Is AI actually intelligent?

This might be controversial and full disclosure this is ‘just’ my opinion however no I do not think AI is intelligent even artificially so. It is instead a combination of an extremely fast search agent with the ability to analyse and compile this data into a useful piece of information combine with a little programming to appropriately sprinkle in a few expressions of apparent emotion such ‘Great choice’ or ‘My personal recommendation to you is…’ however neither of these expressions, in these instances are used to express actual emotion or a viewpoint.

As an example you might ask an AI agent a question such as ‘It’s going to rain tomorrow where can I go?’ your AI agent suggests 1 Swimming 2 Shopping 3 Café, you type back ‘Swimming, where shall I go for that?’ and you get a super nice response ‘Great choice, there are three swimming pools near you which are open tomorrow, would you me to list them with opening times and costs?’ so much ‘friendly’ than a straight web search but actually it is just a web search compiled more digestibly and wrapped in a complement, with a lead thrown in to the possible next step.

News flash! if you’d picked ‘Shopping’ it would have similarly responded ‘Great choice….’ Followed by relevant info, belaying the fact that, unlike an actual sentient person, it has no emotional reaction to your choice and therefore cannot and is not making a judgement. It has purely been programmed to chuck ‘Great choice’ at the appropriate point in your interaction to give the impression of emotion and therefore intelligence.

This actually makes me feel better to know and doesn’t alter the fact that I now prefer using it to a ‘old fashioned’ web search, mostly due to the more useful and personalised data gathering, digesting and conveying, but yes also because I like being told a made a great choice!!
